The painting depicts a low-tide moment in the Thames Estuary. In the foreground, the muddy riverbed is revealed as the water has receded. Further out, a cargo ship sails along the river, with the distant shoreline visible in the background. Grey and white tones dominate, while sunlight breaking through the cloudy sky gently illuminates the ship.
